About Mexican Independence Day
Mexican Independence Day marks the start of the war of independence from Spain, which began on September 16, 1810, when the priest Miguel Hidalgo called for an uprising in the town of Dolores. That call is remembered as the Grito de Dolores.
On the night of September 15, the president repeats the Grito from the balcony of the National Palace in Mexico City, rings the bell and crowds in the Zócalo reply with “¡Viva México!” Towns across the country do the same, with fireworks, mariachi and food such as pozole.
