About Day of the Dead
Día de Muertos is a Mexican tradition of remembering and honoring loved ones who have died. It is not a sad day: families welcome the souls of their dead with joy, music and food. UNESCO has recognized it as part of humanity’s intangible cultural heritage.
Families build an ofrenda, an altar with photographs, candles, marigolds, favorite foods and pan de muerto. Many also visit cemeteries to clean and decorate graves, and some of the best known celebrations are in Oaxaca and Michoacán.
