About Bonfire Night
Bonfire Night remembers the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when a group of conspirators led by Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London. The plot failed, and people lit bonfires to celebrate the king’s survival.
Today it’s marked with bonfires, fireworks and food such as toffee apples and parkin. Towns across Britain hold displays, and Lewes in East Sussex is famous for its large bonfire processions.
Make the wait part of the fun
- Look up the nearest public fireworks display and buy tickets before they sell out.
- Pick a recipe for toffee apples or parkin and try a practice batch first.
- Sort out warm clothes, gloves and a flask for the evening.
