About Rose Monday
Rose Monday is the high point of Carnival in Germany’s Rhineland. People dress in costume, and floats and marching bands wind through the streets while the crowd cheers “Alaaf” in Cologne and “Helau” in Düsseldorf and Mainz.
Riders on the floats throw sweets, flowers and small gifts to the crowd, so bring a bag. It’s not a national holiday, but many workplaces and schools in the carnival cities close for the day.
Make the wait part of the fun
- Plan your costume weeks ahead, and choose something warm that you can wear over a layer.
- Book your train and a place to stay early, since the carnival cities fill up fast.
- Pick a viewing spot along the route, and bring a bag for the sweets.
