Carnival is Brazil’s biggest celebration, with four days of music, dancing and costumes before Lent. In Rio de Janeiro, the samba schools parade in the Sambadrome, while in Salvador the crowds follow trios elétricos through the streets.

Across the country there are also street parties, called blocos, and in Recife and Olinda the music is frevo, with dancers carrying small colorful umbrellas. Many people take the whole week off, and hotel prices rise early.
