How many days until Eid al-Fitr?

When is Eid al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr is on 1 Shawwal, the day after Ramadan ends, and it falls about 11 days earlier each year: March 9 in 2027 and February 26 in 2028. The dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia, and because the Islamic calendar follows the moon, other countries can differ by a day.

About Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr, the “festival of breaking the fast,” marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. Muslims around the world begin the day with a special morning prayer, then visit family and friends, share sweet dishes and give gifts, often to children.

It’s celebrated for about three days. Before the Eid prayer, families give zakat al-fitr, a donation to help people in need take part in the festival, and the usual greeting is “Eid Mubarak.”

Make the wait part of the fun

• Make a list of the relatives and friends you want to visit, and sort out travel plans early.
• Plan the sweets and dishes you’ll bake or buy, and shop for ingredients in the last week of Ramadan.
• Set aside your zakat al-fitr and some small gifts or envelopes for the children in your family.
