How many days until Eid al-Adha?

When is Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Adha is on 10 Dhu al-Hijjah, during the Hajj pilgrimage, and it falls about 11 days earlier each year: May 16 in 2027 and May 5 in 2028. The dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia, and because the Islamic calendar follows the moon, other countries can differ by a day.

About Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha, the “festival of sacrifice,” remembers the prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. It falls at the end of the Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca, and is one of the two main Eids in Islam.

It’s celebrated for about four days. After the Eid prayer, families who are able to do so sacrifice an animal and share the meat with relatives, neighbors and people in need.

Make the wait part of the fun

• Decide early how you’ll mark the day, and arrange your qurbani with a trusted local or charity provider well ahead of Eid.
• Plan a family meal and invite relatives or neighbors who might otherwise be on their own.
• Prepare gifts and new clothes in advance, and book any travel before it gets busy.
