About Swiss National Day
Swiss National Day commemorates the Federal Charter of 1291, the alliance of the first Swiss cantons that is traditionally seen as the founding of Switzerland. It has been a public holiday across the whole country since 1994.
The evening is marked with bonfires on hills, fireworks and paper lanterns. Many farms offer an August 1 brunch with bread, cheese, rösti and fresh dairy products.
Make the wait part of the fun
- Book a spot at a farm brunch early, since the popular ones fill up weeks ahead.
- Find the best hilltop for the bonfires and fireworks near you.
- Buy lanterns and a Swiss flag for the children, so they can join the evening procession.
