About Memorial Day
Memorial Day honors the men and women of the U.S. military who died while serving. It grew out of Decoration Day, which began after the Civil War as a day for decorating soldiers’ graves, and it’s now a federal holiday.
Many communities hold parades and ceremonies, and families visit cemeteries and memorials. For many people it’s also a long weekend and the unofficial start of summer.
Make the wait part of the fun
- Find a local parade or ceremony and plan to go with family.
- Visit a cemetery or memorial near you, and bring flowers or a small flag.
- Plan the long weekend early: a cookout, a trip, or the first beach day of the year.
